This is Castle Schonberg. The palace of the Habsburg dynasty. At one point the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburgs laid claim to over half of Europe. Of course the strain of managing that much land along with fighting the Turks and worrying about Martin Luther cause Charles V to abdicate and join a monastery. Haha. But suffice it to say, this palace is the only one that can compete with Versailles for sheer magnificence. And the Habsburgs had several good rulers especially Franz Joseph. Although he played a part in WWI I can’t help but admire his hard work and spartan lifestyle. I think rulers and politicians like him are quite possibly a thing of the past… But I digress, this palace was magnificent and unlike Versailles hadn’t been looted. So a good deal of the furniture, tapestries, and decorations were dated back to the 17th century. Very, very beautiful without being gaudy. I really liked this particular palace.

This photo is of the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland, an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant’s Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea.
